NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 21, 2007--Bike New York announced today that Commerce Bank, “America’s Most Convenient Bank,” will be the title sponsor for the Five Boro Bike Tour, the country’s largest cycling event. The multiyear agreement begins with the 30th anniversary Tour, which will take place on May 6, 2007, and marks the event’s first title sponsorship since 1990.
“We are thrilled to welcome Commerce Bank to the Five Boro Bike Tour,” said Bike New York Executive Director Pam Tice. “As we approach the Tour’s 30th anniversary, having this top-level sponsor commitment ensures that the experience of cycling traffic-free through New York City will be available to new generations of riders.”
“The sponsorship will preserve the friendly, welcoming nature of the Tour while allowing us to improve entertainment and rider services,” Tice noted. “The partnership is ideal for us in that both parties are deeply committed to the New York area and place a premium on customer service.”
Welcome stations as riders cross borough lines, enhancements to the post-ride Festival, and expanded facilities for riders with disabilities are among the most visible plans for the initial year of the sponsorship.
Bike New York’s growing Bicycle Education Program, which is a primary beneficiary of Tour proceeds, will also expand as a result of the Commerce Bank sponsorship. Offerings include free classes and workshops for adults, children, and families, and custom programs for groups.
“We are very excited to take an active role in this premier cycling event, which will pass through many of the neighborhoods that are home to our more than 50 New York City locations,” said Commerce Bank Founder and Chairman Vernon W. Hill. “Commerce and Bike New York share the common goal of surprising both first-time and repeat riders with exciting new amenities, entertainment, and access enhancements that will, as we say at Commerce, ‘WOW!’ everyone who takes part in this tremendous cycling event and long-time New York City tradition.”
The Commerce Bank Five Boro Bike Tour, as the event will be known, travels 42 miles through New York City using traffic-free streets, highways, and bridges. Founded in 1977 with just 250 participants, this non-competitive ride now involves more than 31,000 cyclists and 1,500 volunteers and is co-produced by the New York City Department of Transportation. The route begins in Manhattan and passes through the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn before crossing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island, where a festival awaits. A free ride on the Staten Island Ferry back to Manhattan completes the day. Prospective riders and volunteers should visit www.BikeNewYork.org for more information.
