Gustav Larsson was best Team CSC Saxo Bank rider at the World Time Trial Championships on Thursday where the Swedish rider finished in fifth place, while Team Columbia's Bert Grabsch won the title as the new World Champion after Fabian Cancellara having won for the last two years.
On the podium was also Canadian Svein Tuft (Symmetrics Professional Cycling Team) and former Team CSC rider David Zabriskie (Garmin-Chipotle).
Lars Bak and Michael Blaudzun finished 19th and 24th. For Blaudzun this was the very last race in his career and of course a bit more special than otherwise.
"I'd expected more of myself after doing well in Vuelta a España. I started off well today but ran out of power during the final 10-15 kilometers, so maybe I am a bit worn out after the Vuelta after all. I'm a bit annoyed because other than today I'm quite satisfied with my performance during the latter part of my career," said Blaudzun after the race.
Larsson was happy with his performance even though he would not have minded another medal to hang next to his Olympic medal from a month and a half ago.
"I was well aware that my form was not perfect but I was hoping for a medal. But after having tested the route for the last couple of days I knew it was better suited for some one like Grabsch though because it was flat as a pancake. I like a more hilly route like the one in Beijing so at the end of the day I'm happy with my fifth place even though it's always annoying loosing out on a medal, when your that close," commented Larsson.
