The drive to the Sussex County Fairgrounds was about 90 minutes. Traffic was light, the sun was blasting, and the countryside was quite beautiful.
Thanks to Neilís warning I took it easy on route 15 - there were several speed traps.
The course is a 1.5 mile loop. Itís virtually flat - only 2 real corners on the road that circles the grounds. Pavement was smooth and fairly clean, no problem to ride the race wheels here.
There were several fields. I was in the 1/2/3 A race. The Bís started before us (cat 4/5) and they waited until they almost got around the first lap and then they started us.
Overall, the pace was slow. It averaged only 24.2 for the 60 minute race. The only team out in force was the Colavita guys. They had about 8 guys in a field of 50 or so riders. There were probably 6-8 juniors in the field too.
The Colavita guys attacked many times, at least 3 times their own guys bridged up to their own moves. It was actually kind of amusing. There were a couple of strong guys who did some work on the front. I was constantly pulling through and finding no one came after me. Did a lot of work for nothing.
With 2 laps to go, 2 guys went. No one chased and they went up about 500 yards. Dangling in sight. With a lap left, 2 more guys went. I reacted to this but missed their wheels. Found myself with 2 other guys just off the front so I kept pulling. I moved over, looked back, and I had dropped them. The field was now 200 yards behind me, and the break was still 500 yards ahead. I waited to see if the pack would come up. It didnít.
With about a mile to go I started hammering. At 1/4 mile one of the guys in the break attacked. 400 yards from the line I passed 3 of the guys in the break. I kept accelerating, with 200 to go the guy was still 50 yards ahead of me, At the line he beat me by a bike length. Almost made it. The sprint felt good for the 1st time this year.
With such beautiful weather it was a really fun race. I was able to wear shorts and a regular jersey. Too bad it wasnít a tougher faster field.
The best part was that they paid out $90 for the 2nd place. Very surprised for such a small race. Iíll try to go again.
